About Empor
Empor is a centralized marketplace built by students, for students, aiming to minimize waste and promote sustainability through a circular economy. By offering a platform where students can buy and sell their second-hand items, Empor helps reduce environmental impact while making student life easier.
Once you have completed a purchase, a unique 6-digit code is generated on the app or website. Then, the buyer and seller coordinate a place to meet up for the exchange. The transaction is considered complete/payment is released when the buyer puts in the 6-digit code provided by the seller.
Getting Setup
Currently, we are only live at McGill University, so you must use your McGill email to sign up. This ensures that you are a university student and only buying and selling with other college students.
Unfortunately, Empor is exclusive to university students.
No, the website (and app) are free to use (free to download), but we take 8% commission on each sale.
Anyone with a university email ending with ‘mcgill.ca’ can sign up (so students and staff).
Buyers
- Contact the seller: After purchasing an item, send a message to the seller to confirm the details.
- Arrange a meeting: Set up a convenient time and place to meet. We recommend choosing a public location on campus during daylight hours.
- Complete the transaction: When you meet, input the 6-digit code received from the seller to release your payment.
- Receive your item: Once the code is verified, the seller will hand over the item to you.
Contact the seller to set up another time to meet. If the issue persists, please contact us at support@empor.ca or DM us on Instagram.
If you wish to receive a full refund, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the agreed time to meet. You can cancel the purchase from the app before you meet. Once the code has been entered, however, you can't receive a refund.
Before inputting the 6-digit code provided by the seller, please make sure that the item is how you expected. Once the exchange is complete, a refund is not eligible. For more info, please check our terms and conditions.
The seller does not receive your payment unless you input the 6-digit code provided by them. Once you are satisfied with the condition of the item, you can input the code on the website/app. Before that, the payment is held securely through Stripe.
Selling
- Tap the ‘Create a listing’ icon on the top right.
- Fill in the name and description of the item you’re listing.
- Upload at least 2 good quality photos of the item.
- Decide on a price.
- Add specifics to help students easily find your item.
Tap ‘edit’ on the listing you wish to change the price for. Change the price, and then list again.
It’s free to list an item but once you make a sale, we take an 8% commission on each sale. This is the minimum required to maintain and improve our platform.
Follow up with the buyer through the website; they might be running late or at the wrong location.
When someone purchases your item, the payment is held securely through Stripe. Once you meet with the buyer in person and they input the 6-digit code on their website/app, the transaction is considered completed. The item is exchanged only when the code is provided by you, as the seller, which releases the funds.
Payments
Go to your profile, tap ‘manage payments’ and set up an account with Stripe in seconds.
For you to receive your payment, the buyer has to input the 6-digit code on their website/app once they’re happy with the condition of the item. It can take up to 5 days for the funds to be released to your account.
All of our payments are handled through Stripe.
